Americans are Voting with Their Feet

Over the past few years, America has witnessed one of the most significant migrations in its history. It’s not caused by war, not caused by famine or disease, but the biggest scourge of them all: taxes.

Millions of Americans have packed up all that they’ve ever known to cross the country toward states that still believe in lower taxes, safe communities, affordable living, and economic freedom. There’s no denying it, red states are growing richer, while many blue states are being emptied of opportunity because of their own policies.

The numbers tell the story better than words can. According to recent migration data highlighted by FOX News, states like South Carolina have seen explosive population growth driven almost entirely by Americans relocating from heavily regulated northern and coastal states. Texas and Florida also dominate U-Haul's destination rankings as families and employers seek a friendlier economic climate. Meanwhile, states like New York and California, once known for their booming business and thriving cities,  continue losing hundreds of thousands of residents annually as taxpayers flee rising costs, dangerous crime, and a deteriorating quality of life.

This could have been avoided, but there are consequences to high-tax policy.

For years, progressive leaders in blue states promised that higher taxes and bigger government would solve their state’s problems. Voters often pulled a lever for more taxes, expecting more government services in return. However, Americans living in high-tax areas have found themselves paying more while receiving less. Crime rose in major cities as law enforcement budgets were slashed. Parents became frustrated when their kids knew about DEI but not long division. Small businesses struggled under mountains of regulations while energy costs and housing prices soared.

There reaches a breaking point.

The Great American Migration of this century is an ideological one, driven by markets and self-determination. Across the South and the Heartland, former Californians and New Yorkers are realizing that freedom can be found in family values, lower costs, and a healthier way of life.

As wealthy residents relocate, so does their money. Entire industries are increasingly shifting operations toward states with predictable regulations, lower operating costs, and pro-growth leadership. The result is a relocation of wealth unlike anything seen in generations. Capital once concentrated in a handful of coastal strongholds is now flowing into southern communities, revitalizing local economies and creating jobs for working families. There are Sun Belt communities that have never seen this level of growth and interest.

Texas has emerged as one of the nation’s top destinations for business expansion and relocation, in large part thanks to the state’s no income tax policy. States across the South are benefiting from the same low-tax, business-friendly trend, attracting new manufacturing facilities, financial investment, and technological development without abandoning the principles that made our country and their states successful in the first place.

The contrast with struggling blue states could not be clearer. In New York, leaders who once dismissed concerns about taxation and public safety are now openly begging residents to return after years of population decline— and even making fun of them for leaving. In New York, as the new mayor promised government giveaways, the state is hiking taxes and slashing programs because they are running out of other people’s money. The tired coastal elitism has failed, and American families are sending a message with their moving trucks.

This migration reflects a broader national debate about what kind of country we want to build in the decades ahead. As we look back on the past 250 years, what has worked? Free markets, family values, and low taxes. Our founding virtues of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can be found in the suburbs of Idaho, in the fields of Ohio, and along the beaches of Florida. But for places like San Francisco and Albany? It’s a far cry from what this country represents.

For the Lafayette Partnership, these trends only prove that when the government respects constitutional principles and individual liberty, prosperity follows. Americans do not need endless mandates or centralized control to succeed. They need opportunity, security, and the freedom to build better lives for their families.

They can lead themselves, if they’re allowed to. Millions of citizens still believe in the promise of self-government, and they’re proving it with a moving truck and a mission.
